Space Invaders, except you are the invaders. You do not shoot. You shield. Your formation marches home while a cannon below dodges, fires, and gets faster every wave. That is the whole game, and it is exactly as stressful as it sounds.
Save the Invaders is the latest spare part on the heap: familiar silhouette, one rule flipped. Same side-scrolling dread, completely different job description.
What you already know
Pixel aliens in formation. A gun at the bottom. Bullets crossing the screen. Waves that escalate. You have played this shape a hundred times, even if the cabinet was before your time.
The muscle memory is there: watch the pattern, react to the rhythm, survive the march. Scrap Heap Games keeps all of that and asks a single question: what if you were not the one with the laser?
The twist: defend, do not attack
Your invaders do not fire back. They just need to get home. The formation moves and drops on its own, classic march behaviour, while you click to place a short shield on any invader in the line.
One shield lasts one second. One hit breaks it. Losses do not come back.
There is no ammo to manage and no score for shooting. The only interaction that matters is choosing who to protect, and when. Front row or back row , any invader can take the shield if you think they need it.
How a wave works
The cannon tracks back and forth beneath you, firing on an interval that tightens each wave. Shields absorb a single hit; after that, the bubble breaks and the invader is exposed. Let too many fall and the run ends. March the survivors down until the front line reaches the cannon , that clears the wave, plays the victory sting, and sends you into the next countdown.
It feels less like an arcade shooter and more like shepherding a formation through hostile airspace. The tension is not “can I hit them” but “can I keep enough of them alive to matter.”
Why this one belongs on the heap
Like Wordage and Wombat Dash, Save the Invaders passes the one-line test: describe it in a sentence and wait for the double-take.
If you want to see whether your reflexes work on the other side of the screen, play it here. Bring a name for the leaderboard if you make it deep enough. The cannon will not slow down on your account.
